After this season Boyd was signed to a contract for one year to join Ross County. While playing for Ross County, Boyd is often referred to by his fans under the name “Ginger Pele” because of his appearance resembling Pele.

His professional career began with Livingston and He joined Partick Thistle on loan in January of 2005-06’s season. He was a key player in helping the Jags to gain promotion out of The Second Division and, after the play-offs, Thistle then purchased his contract from Livingston. In the beginning of 2007-08 season with Partick Thistle promoted Boyd was in first team position in a limited number of teams and was eager to compete for his spot.

On 1 January 2014, Boyd opened the scoring as Ross County won the New Year Highland derby match 2–1 away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
