Hopeton Overton Brown (born 18 April 1960) is an engineer in the field of recording and production who gained notoriety in the 1980s by mixing dub music and dubbed it “Scientist”. A protégé to King Tubby (Osbourne Ruddock) Scientist’s contemporary include several people who, while working in King Tubby’s studio contributed to the creation of the genre throughout the decade of the 1970s. Ruddock, Bunny Lee, Philip Smart, Pat Kelly and Prince Jammy.

Scientist was the engineer for studios recording throughout the Washington, D.C. area from 1985 onwards.

Scientist gained a lot of attention in the early 1980s . He recorded numerous albums, his mix appearing on numerous albums in the early part in the decade. Scientist recorded a string of albums in the beginning 1980s, which were released via Greensleeves Records with titles themed on the fictional accomplishments of Scientist in combating Space Invaders, Pac-Men, and Vampires and also having won his place in the World Cup. The songs on these albums were performed by the Roots Radicals who were his most frequent collaborators. Particularly the band was a favorite producer for Henry “Junjo” Lawes, who mixed many albums with the Roots Radics with many of them inspired by tracks from Barrington Levy. He also performed a lot working for Linval Thompson, and Jah Thomas. In 1982, he left Channel One to work at Tuff Gong studio as second engineer for Errol Brown.

King Tubby’s was closed in the late 1970s, and was appointed the chief engineer of Channel One when hired by the Hoo Kim brothers. This gave him the opportunity to mix on a 16-track desk instead of the four tracks that Tubby’s had.

Scientist was introduced via his father who was radio and television repair technician. Scientist began to build amplifiers of his own and purchased transformers and components from Tubby’s Dromilly Road studio. While at the studio Scientist requested Tubby to allow him to try mixing. He was enlisted as an assistant at Tubby’s and was assigned tasks such as winding transformer coils. He started his career as a mixer in late 1970s, initially mixing dubs of remixed Studio One tracks for Don Mais’s Roots Tradition label, given the chance to shine to mix when Prince Jammy cut short a mixing session with Mais because he was tired and couldn’t keep going. The name was derived from an observation made that was made by Tubby on behalf of Bunny Lee, with regard to his technical skills, “Damn, this little boy must be a scientist.”

Scientist has alleged in court that Greensleeves originally released albums without his knowledge, according to his interview with United Reggae online magazine. After this, Dub Мир label began working directly with Scientist to reissue his best-known work. In 2016, Greensleeves removed the Scientist moniker for a run of reissues, substituting titles such as Junjo Presents: Wins The World Cup.
