His birth name was Alexander Roger Wallace Jones on January 31, 1967 in Manhattan The elder child from Elizabeth Frere and Robin C. Jones. Tobias, his younger brother Frere-Jones, founded the typeface design business Frere- Jones Typography, and is an instructor at the Yale School of Art. Tobias and Alexander have both legally changed their names from Jones to FrereJones in 1981.
Frere-Jones plays guitar, bass and a variety of electronic instruments. He formed the group Dolores while at Brown. Dolores recorded two tapes that were full length: one in 1987, and another in 1990. After the move into New York in 1988, the group performed for two years prior to disbanding. (Their recordings from this time were two tracks to a compilation released on Fang Records called Live At The Knitting Factory.) In 1990, FrereJones co-founded the instrumental rhythm group Ui together with Clem Waldmann. The band played their first live performance in the year 1991. They continued for the next eight years touring Europe, the United States and Europe, performing as opening acts for bands such as Stereolab as well as Tortoise.
Frere-Jones debuted as The New Yorker’s pop critic on March 8, 2004 with “Let’s Go Swimming”, an essay on Arthur Russell. He followed in the footsteps of the magazine’s past critics Ellen Willis, Mark Moses, Elizabeth Wurtzel, and Nick Hornby. He has covered independent acts like Arcade Fire, Joanna Newsom, Grizzly Bear, Manu Chao, and Bon Iver, as well as mainstream successes like Neil Diamond, Mariah Carey, Wu-Tang Clan, Lil Wayne, and Prince. Three essays originally published in the magazine have appeared in Da Capo Press’s Best Music Writing anthologies.
On October 22, 2007, The New Yorker published “A Paler Shade of White”, an essay in which Frere-Jones examined the changing role of race in pop, specifically indie rock and hip-hop of the last two decades. In the piece Frere-Jones charges indie with being too white and therefore not sounding black enough and hip hop for being too black. The piece was roundly criticized by numerous pop music critics for Frere-Jone’s seeming lack of knowledge regarding pop and rock music history, and controversial understanding of race in relation to music. proved to be controversial, eliciting responses from Playboy, The Village Voice, Slate, and Simon Reynolds, among dozens of other news outlets and blogs. The Stereogum music blog declared the controversy a ‘war’ between music writers. The New Yorker received more mail about “A Paler Shade of White” than it did for any other essay since “Escaping Picasso”, Adam Gopnik’s December 16, 1996 essay about Pablo Picasso. Frere-Jones published follow-ups to his article to address some of the criticism and where he is cited as writing: “…and also says that when he called Michael Jackson and Hall and Oates “equally gifted,” it was not a typo.”
In 1983, Frere-Jones was Capulet in an St. Ann’s production of Romeo and Juliet directed by Nancy Fales Garrett. Mia Sara played Juliet. In 1984 the play by the play by Frere-Jones We Three Kings was one of the ten plays that were selected to be performed at the Young Playwrights Festival. The original production featured John Pankow and Zeljko Ivanek. The production that was performed of The Public Theater starred Adam Klugman the son of Jack Klugman. His sequel play, Jump Down Turn Around was staged in St. Ann’s and starred Frere-Jones, as well as the actress Josh Hamilton.

Sasha FrereJones (born Alexander Roger Wallace Jones in 1967) is an American writer musician, music critic, and musician. She has published for Pretty Decorating, ego trip Hit It And quit It Mean, Slant, The New York Post, The Wire, The Village Voice, Slate, Spin as well as The New York Times. He was an editor at The New Yorker from 2004 until 2015. In January of 2015 Frere-Jones was fired from The New Yorker to work for Genius as executive editor. Frere- Jones resigned from Genius after a few months of being a critic-at-large for The Los Angeles Times. Frere-Jones resigned from The Times in May of 2016.
Frere-Jones was a student at in the Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn from 1972 until 1984. He was awarded an award at the Young Playwrights Festival in 1983 for his production “We Three Kings.” After finishing his studies at St. Ann’s in 1984 and attending Brown University for three years but didn’t finish his studies. Then he went to an additional year at the Tisch School of Arts and Sciences at NYU and specialized in Dramatic Writing, then transferred to Columbia University in 1991. He graduated from Columbia University’s Columbia School of General Studies with the Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology in 1993.
In 1994, he married lawyer Deborah Holmes, with whom he has two sons. They divorced in 2006.
