Slean released her debut album Universe (1997) around the age of 19. The album was then followed with Blue Parade in 1998. Night Bugs was her first major label album. It was co-produced with Slean Hawksley Workman and Slean Hawksley Workman. The album was the album was issued by WEA in Canada as well as Atlantic Records in the United States. It was heavily influenced by cabaret music.
In the latter half of 2004, she began filming Black Widow with Canadian director David Mortin, a film noir musical inspired by the Evelyn Dick murder case. The film premiered in September 2005 at the film festival circuit as well as it aired on CBC Television in January 2006.
