In 2015, she delivered an address entitled “Islam and the Necessity of Liberal Critique” at the American Humanist Association’s Annual Conference held in Denver, Colorado, that has been watched by a large number of people since being the video was uploaded to YouTube. In the interview Dave Rubin she explained her enthusiasm by declaring that “it felt like my whole life was leading up to that speech.” But she admitted to being anxious to give the speech, considering that the subject of Islam and the dissent movement being “sensitive”, yet was happy with the way her speech received. Haider who is self-described a liberal, is disappointed by what she perceives to be the hostile treatment of Ex-Muslims from liberals. Haider has expressed her concern that women who quit Islam frequently “face ostracism, beatings, harassment and threats from their families and communities, forced travel back to home countries to pry them free of Western influence, and forced marriage,” which is why she should be loved by liberals. But, she believes that she, along with other Ex-Muslims are disregarded by the leftafter being branded as an Islamophobe. Haider claims that this has made the situation of atheists who are ex-Muslims vulnerable due to the fact that “the political right is not our friend. We don’t have allies on the right due to our atheism,” however in the same way, she believes that Muslims also have very few allies on left.
Her father is now an atheist too. Haider explained her transition to atheism that she and her father, culminating in her participation in the Reason Rally in 2016 as a lengthy series of arguments that lasted for more than the course of a decade. But it wasn’t that her father discovered Facebook groups for other Pakistani atheists with active members that were around similar to him that he was at ease moving away from Islam. She advises Muslims to seek out their family’s non-religious friends to help them feel more comfortable moving away from religion.
