Her dissertation for doctoral study was titled “Christine Brooke-Rose and post-war writing in France”.
The year 2013 was the first time Birch received the honor of being to be a Fellow of the British Academy (FBA), the country’s national academy for sciences of the humanities and social. The year after, she was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) which is Scotland’s national academy of science and letters.
In 1996, as she was working towards her second doctorate, Birch was appointed a lecturer at the University of Essex. In 2003, she was elevated to Reader and then Professor of Politics in the year 2012. From 2002 until 2011, she was co- editor in The British Journal of Political Science. Then, in July of 2013, she was a part of at the University of Glasgow where she was appointed chair in Comparative Politics. In 2016 she was appointed to King’s College London as Professor of Political Science and Director of Research of the Department of Political Economy.

Sarah Birch, FRSE, FBA (born 5 December 1963) is an American political scientist and academic who specializes in political science and comparative studies. Since 2016, she is professor of political Science in King’s College London. She was a professor in The University of Essex between 1996 between 1996 and 2013. She also held the chair of Comparative Political Science at the University of Glasgow between 2013 until 2016.
After obtaining the three literary degrees, Birch turned to politics. She was a student of political behavior in the University of Essex, graduating with an Master of Arts (MA) degree in 1994. She continued at Essex to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, which she earned in 1998. The title of her doctoral dissertation was “The social determinants of electoral behaviour in Ukraine, 1989-1994”.
