Sapho is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on January 10, 1950 in Marrakesh, France. Sapho (1950) was a French- Moroccan crooner. The real name of her is Danielle Ebguy.
She wrote two novels and was also involved in the making of a documentary about youngsters of the Intifada and also was a part of the Threepenny Opera, all the while still recording and performing songs of her own. In 1992, she began to concentrate on Umm Kulthum’s music. Umm Kulthum, releasing a complete album of the material and performing around across the globe, including a performance in Jerusalem in 1994.
Returning to composition, Sapho worked and performed in Bagdad, Jerusalem, Nazareth and Gaza before recording Orients (2003) with a classical orchestra made of Jewish, Muslim and Christian musicians. In 2005, accompanied on stage by a flamenco guitarist, she focused on material by famous French songwriter and composer Léo Ferré. In 2006, the album Sapho chante Léo Ferré – Ferré Flamenco followed, featuring a song translated in Darija (Moroccan Arabic dialect). Her latest album, Universelle, in French, English and Darija is a kind of travel through all of her influences, from blues to traditional sounds.
Sapho returned to the music scene after 1985’s Passions Passons. This album was her first album that saw her leave the rock sound she had been accustomed to on her previous albums and take on music from the Middle Eastern sounds she had experienced as a child, which led to a string of shows held at Le Bataclan (Paris). The venue was where she began to play her arrangements of songs that were made famous by the legendary Egyptian musician Umm Kulthum. The following years saw Sapho expanding her repertoire. While living in Mexico Sapho came out with El Sol y la luna featuring an duet with Argentinian musician, Jairo.

The girl was raised at Marrakech, Morocco, Sapho moved to France at the age of 16. At the age of 18 she was alone in Paris she was taking acting lessons along with singing, and playing guitar in the streets. Shortly after an acquaintance of a musician got her to attend an audition at the famous music school Le Petit Conservatoire de Mireille. Sapho was soon to abandon her acting training to pursue music. Her debut album, Le Balayeur du Rex came out in the year 1977, and was produced by RCA.
After a time living in New York, where she was reporter for a French reporter as well as playing in numerous clubs, she travelled to London to record her second album called Janis (1980). Sapho made three records in during the following three years then took a rest to work on a book that featured cartoons taken from Brasserie La Coupole in Paris.
Her next album, Jardin Andalou (1996), blended rock with Arabic and Andalusian elements. This was followed by Digital Sheikha, a more electronic-based album with Pat Jabbar and the contribution of Bill Laswell, for the Swiss label Barraka el Farnatshi. In 1999, La Route nue des hirondelles was released along with her third novel. She transformed La Route nue des hirondelles into a stage show, which she toured for the next couple of years, while also continuing with the Umm Kulthum material.
