Com from Sandur Education Society’s Arts, Science & Commerce College, Bellary, Karnataka. His family was well-off due to their involvement in mining since the 1950s. Santosh was an active participant of the sporting community and participated in numerous local tournaments as well as state- level competitions. He was a participant in the U-21 Cricket’s state-level tournament KSCA playing for Tumkur Zone as a team member as well as a captain.

The 2013 Karnataka state assembly elections, Santosh Lad won with an advantage of more than 45,000 votes. This allowed him to be able to win consecutively for the second consecutive time against Kalghatgi and the third time in all. Congress won an absolute majority of votes to constitute the government. Santosh Lad was appointed as Minister of State for Information and Infrastructure

In 2008, during the Karnataka Assembly elections, he was elected to the Kalghatgi constituency located in Dharwad district. He is currently an active member of the Congress and is a representative of Indian National Congress.
