Urquiaga’s last two seasons were with RCD Espanol, helping the Catalans to reach their final in the UEFA Cup in his first season, which ended in a penalty shootout defeat in German club Bayer 04 Leverkusen. In June 1989, he retired aged 31.
Urquiaga received 14 caps for his Spanish national team over four seasons, and was picked to the team for 1982’s FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 1984 as the first-choice player for the latter competition since the country ended up finishing as runners-up to the hosts France. The first game he played in was on the 26th of March, 1980 with a 0-2 loss in a friendly match against England at Barcelona.

The native of Barakaldo, Biscay, Urquiaga had nine professional seasons with the club’s local giant Athletic Bilbao, being an important defensive player in the club’s back-to back La Liga conquests (1983-84) and playing in all 67 games that he played in that period. Urquiaga made his debut in the tournament on the 13th of May 1979, when he played for 26 minutes in a loss away of 0-4 in a match against Atletico Madrid.
Urquiaga also participated in his first Summer Olympics.
