Sang Nguyen is one of the most popular and richest Australian Politician who was born on January 1, 1960 in Long Xuyên, Vietnam. Sang Minh Nguyen or Nguyen Minh Sang (b. 1 January 1960) is a Vietnamese- Australian politician. He was an Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council from May 1996 to November 2006, serving as the representative of Melbourne West Province.

In March 2006 Martin Pakula, who had unsuccessfully attempted to challenge the former incumbent federal Labor chief Simon Crean in a preselection contest during the previous month was elected over Nguyen, despite Nguyen’s determination to re-test the seat. In 2008, he had considered the possibility of running as Labor’s candidate at the Kororoit by-election.

When Nguyen was in 1993, he was able to take on a role as an employee for the then Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Gareth Evans. He worked for the Minister for three years prior to winning his pre-selection to run for the secure Labor Legislative Council seat of Melbourne West Province at the election of 1996. Nguyen was up against social welfare activist of the left Les Twentyman, who ran as an independent candidate, but Twentyman’s support fell from 22.9 percent in his earlier failed campaign in 1992 to 10.3%. Nguyen got elected. As a legislator Nguyen was a member of the Family and Community Development Committee from 1996 to 1999 and his Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee between 1999 and 2006, and on the House Committee from 2003-06. He was frequently a voice on behalf of the Vietnamese community within the chamber, as well as in other places.

Nguyen is a native of the Vietnamese city of Long Xuyen. He attended Lasan Duc-Minh High School located in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) between 1970 and 1974 however, he left Vietnam in 1977 after becoming a refugee following the loss of the city to its Communists and the closing of the Vietnam War and spent 10 months in the Leamsing refugees’ camp located in Thailand. After securing refugee status 1978, he enrolled in Greythorn High School then completed his second year in Swinburne TAFE in 1980.

He took on several positions that in the service of the community. He worked as a math teacher for the Collingwood Education Centre from 1983 until 1984 and as an employee of the youth department in the Ecumenical Migration Centre from 1985 until 1987, and also as coordinator for the Indochinese Communities Council. When he was elected in 1988 Nguyen got elected into be a member of the City of Richmond council, becoming the youngest council member and the initial Vietnamese councillor. Then, he was elected to be the city’s mayor for one year from August 1991. He was becoming the first Vietnamese mayor in Australia and remained an elected member of the council until. At the time the mayor also became active in his trade union group. He served as the Migrant Liaison Officer of the National Union of Workers from 1989 until 1993.
