Sandra Lynn Neilson (born March 20th 1956) is also known as her maiden name Sandy Bell, is an American former competitive swimmer who was a triple Olympic gold medalist and a former world record holder.
Neilson was a participant during the 1998 and 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials. She did not qualify for 1996 Trials in the 50-meter freestyle with a only 9 one hundredths (0.09) of one second.
Neilson was introduced to her current coach and husband her husband, Dr. Keith Bell, a Texas sports psychologist, in the year 1984. Bell was able to convince Bell in August 1984 before the International Swimming Hall of Fame that Neilson was “retired” for nine years and was still competing with U.S. Masters Swimming. She was therefore eligible under the ISHOF’s retirement rules of four years and Neilson was admitted into the Hall of Fame in 1986.

Neilson was the only winner of her Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) national title in 1971 in the freestyle 100 yards. As a student of El Monte High School, Neilson established CIF Southern Section records in 1972 in both the 100-yard and 50-yard freestyle races. Later, she attended the University of California, Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, where she was part of the UCSB Gauchos swim team and an All-American three times. She was the winner of two championships: the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle national championships.
Although she was ranked as the 3rd-best American athlete, Neilson participated in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany at the age of 16. in the freestyle 100 meters, Neilson took on heavy favorite Shane Gould from Australia and her American teammate Shirley Babashoff in an Olympic record time of 58.59 seconds. This victory earned her for the relay 4×100 meters freestyle along with Babashoff, as well as the 4×100-meter Medley relay. Both Neilson’s relay teams were awarded gold medals in the world record time.
In 1996, Neilson was the first swimmer over 40 to be ranked top 25 in the world in an event (50-meter freestyle) and the first swimmer over 40 to compete in U.S. National Championships, at which she was honored by having USA Swimming’s comeback award named after her, the “Sandy Neilson-Bell Comeback Swimmer of the Year Award”.
