Gbandi joined The Puerto Rico Islanders in the USL First Division in 2008 and helped the Islanders to win in 2008 the USL First Division regular season title, and then progress to the semi-finals of CONCACAF Champions League 2008-09. Gbandi was in Puerto Rico through the 2010 season.

Gbandi was dismissed from school before he was selected for the year 2007’s MLS Supplemental Draft by FC Dallas however, Gbandi never played any first- team minutes with the team and was dismissed at the close of the season.

Born in the vicinity of at the Firestone rubber plantation Gbandi along with his family moved from Liberia in the United States to Houston, Texas following the beginning of the First Liberian Civil War in 1989, at barely six. Gbandi then attended Jersey Village High School, played soccer in club teams for Houston Dynamos and the Houston Dynamos and the Houston Texans when he was a youngster and then played four years of college soccer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Gbandi was part of 56 matches for UAB and scored 10 goals, and providing 14 assists. As a sophomore in 2004, Gbandi was named First Team All-Conference America and the following year received the honor of Second Team All-Conference America one year later.

Sandy’s older brother Chris Gbandi, is also a professional soccer player. They played with each other with FC Dallas in 2007 and played against each other in the year the year 2010, after Chris was signed by Miami FC.

On March 15, 2011, Gbandi signed with NSC Minnesota Stars of the second division North American Soccer League. He was released by the club on November 29, 2011.
