Sandra Lee-Vercoe is one of the most popular and richest Diplomat who was born on August 8, 1952 in Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand. Sandra Rose Te Hakamatua-Lee-Vercoe QSO (born the 8th of August, 1952) is an ex- New Zealand politician and diplomat. She was the deputy leader (and for a short time as leader) for the Alliance party, and later the High Commissioner for Niue.

In the election of 1993, Lee became the first Maori woman to win a general election in the Auckland Central electorate, after she won in the Auckland Central electorate as an Alliance candidate, defeating incumbent Richard Prebble. After the departure of Mana Motuhake founder Matiu Rata in 1994 Lee was appointed Mana Motuhake’s leader in the political arena. In November 1994 when Jim Anderton stepped down as leader of the Alliance for personal reasons Lee was appointed his replacement. Lee convinced Anderton to return to the top leadership in the month of May. Lee was sacked from her Auckland Central seat to Labour’s Judith Tizard at the 1996 election. Lee lost her position as Mana Motuhake’s leader in 2001, following an unsuccessful leadership challenge from Willie Jackson but stayed on as chief deputy in the Alliance until 2002, before announcing her retirement.

Lee was High Commissioner to Niue, representing the New Zealand and UK governments, from 12 February 2003 to 3 October 2005.

In September 2006 Lee was appointed to the board of Housing New Zealand. In July 2007 she was appointed to the board of Te Papa Tongarewa.

At the age of 16 Lee got married to Mike Lee, giving birth to the eldest of their two daughters aged 17. They divorced in 1992. Lee is wed to Anaru Vercoe since 2002.

Lee came from Wellington and was raised in a two-bedroom Maori Affairs house that she shared with her parents, grandparents and great-grandfather. Lee was educated at Onslow College. Lee then moved to Auckland where she settled at Waiheke Island. Her political involvement began with the founding of Mana Motuhake, a Maori issues-based party in 1979. However, her political career it was not until 1983 when she was elected as a member of The Waiheke County Council. She was elected chairman of the Council at the end of 1989. In 1989, when Waiheke was merged into Auckland in the proper way, Lee became a member of the Auckland City Council.

The year was 1991. Lee was elected president of Mana Motuhake. In the following year, Mana Motuhake agreed to join the Alliance an alliance that consists of minor political parties.

When a Labour-Alliance coalition government was formed after the 1999 election, Lee became Minister of Local Government, Minister of Conservation, and Associate Minister of Māori Affairs. She was ranked seventh in Cabinet. During her time as Minister of Conservation Lee was known as an outspoken opponent of commercial whaling. In 2002, the Alliance began to split between a strongly left-wing faction (led by Matt McCarten and Laila Harré) and a more moderate faction (led by Anderton), Lee generally backed Anderton, but eventually decided to retire from politics. In the 2002 election, she did not stand for either the Alliance (now led by McCarten and Harré) or Anderton’s new Progressive Coalition.
