Ganieva was born in Moscow to an Avar family. She moved to Dagestan with her family, where she lived and studied in Gunib. She returned to Moscow in 2002 and graduated from Maxim Gorky Literature Institute. She is a literary critic at the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper.
She was awarded the Debut Prize in 2009 for her debut novel Salaam, Dalgat!, which she published under the pseudonym Gulla Khirachev. Only at the ceremony was her identity revealed as an author. The novel depicts the daily life of Dagestani youth living in cities. It also shows the decline of traditional life and the difficult relationships they have with Islam, the traditional religion of Dagestanis. To communicate, the characters use “Dagestani Russian”, which is a pidgin form of Russian. This was the first time that this version of Russian had been presented in a literary work.
In April 2015 her novel Bride and Groom was released in Russia and listed for the major literary awards, such as the Russian Booker Prize, although it did not win.
