Sander Westerveld (born 23 October 1974) is a Dutch football coach and former professional who was goalkeeper. The goalkeeping coach is at South African Premier Soccer League club Ajax Cape Town.

He was a crucial player during the triple season in 2000-01 for Liverpool and was the star during Liverpool’s League Cup final victory over Birmingham City, making the crucial save against Andrew Johnson in the penalty shoot-out.

The highlight of his playing career, spent in five different countries, was a treble of the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup with Liverpool in 2001. Westerveld was included in the Netherlands’ squads for Euro 2000 and Euro 2004, but, due to the consistency of Edwin van der Sar, earned 6 international caps over five years.

Sociedad were runners-up in La Liga in the 2002–2003 season, and played in the following season’s Champions League. However, that season saw him loaned to RCD Mallorca, where Miguel Ángel Moyá kept him out of the team. His contract then expired.

After the 1998-99 season where he was instrumental in helping Vitesse to be a part of Europe, Westerveld was sold to Liverpool after which he was succeeded by David James. He was the most expensive goalkeeper to play in British soccer when he signed with the Reds at a reported price of PS4 million in this summer. Westerveld was made his Liverpool debut against Sheffield Wednesday on 7 August 1999, in a 2-1 home victory. On the 28th of August 1999, he saved the goal of a Davor Suker penalty when Liverpool defeated Arsenal 2 – 2. He was Gerard Houllier’s initial option as a successor James as the number one player at Anfield and Westerveld proved the manager’s trust in his role as a pivotal player during Liverpool’s journey back to Europe and allowing the smallest number of goals during 2000-99’s Premier League season.

Westerveld’s first game in the professional ranks was played for FC Twente in 1994. After two seasons , the player relocated to Vitesse for three years.

Westerveld first made an appearance for the Netherlands on the 8th of June, 1999, during an away friendly loss of 3-1 in Brazil on the island of Goiania. He did not play again after the Bolton error, and was sold to Real Sociedad of La Liga on 16 December 2001, for £3.4 million.
