In 2006 Zygmuntowicz was the chief creative officer for the Strad3D project which The Strad Library called “One of the most groundbreaking and comprehensive studies of the violin form ever conceived.” It included an initial 3D scan of the lasers on Stradivari as well as Guarneri violins (the Titian and Willemotte’ Stradivaris, and the Plowden Guarneri “del Gesu’) and included Acoustic testing along with CT scanning. Zygmuntowicz made the experiment an expansive collaborative project that brought together musicians, makers and filmmakers, as well as acoustical engineers as well as other researchers – including physicist and co-developer George Bissinger, who had invented the idea of lasers for vibration scanning.

Samuel Zygmuntowicz (b. 1956) is an award-winning contemporary Luthier. He began his instrument-making training at the age of 13 and then studied restoration and making with Peter Prier, Carl Becker and Rene Morel. Since 1985, he has been working on the island of Brooklyn, New York. His first work showcases his skills as a copyist for traditional instruments. Later work incorporates personal models that are based on sophisticated research. Results from these studies are published in various publications, both digital and print. Zygmuntowicz is a fiddler who is active and performs with various folk groups. His fiddlery can be heard on recording Grand Picnic, and Jump When the Trumpets Blow.
Zygmuntowicz is a native of Philadelphia and was the son of Jewish Holocaust survivors from Poland. He was a graduate of the Violin Making School of America in Salt Lake City (1976-80) in which time he was employed by Carl Becker. In 1980 the Becker-inspired Stradivari replica of a violin constructed by Zygmuntowicz received two gold medals for instrument workmanship and tone during the Violin Society of America Competition. In the same the year Zygmuntowicz started five years of further training at the workshop for restoration of the Jacques Francais Rare Violins, Inc. along with Rene A. Morel. Isaac Stern owned two Zygmuntowicz violins. Following Stern passed away in 2001 the two violins were sold in an auction in Tarisio auction held in
- each one beating the previous record for highest amount that a violin was sold for by a living maker during an auction. The record was broken the month of October 2013.
According to Zygmuntowicz, “The instruments were gently activated by tapping the bridge, and then three scanning lasers detected the resulting patterns of vibration, which were revealed on screen as a rippling landscape of colour and motion, rather like a motion-capture animated film.” The result was the first three-dimensional motion capture of violins in use. The practical value of these scientific investigations continues to emerge. Initial findings were published in an article appearing in the January 2009 issue of The Strad.
