Sammy Okpro (born May 2 1984) is the defensive coordinator of York’s team of football. They are the York Lions of U Sports. He was a player in CIS football in the position of defensive back with the Concordia Stingers from 2004 to 2007.

Okpro was selected as the fourth pick, 25th overall from the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL) during 2008’s CFL Draft. Okpro played for three games during the regular season, while being on the practice roster until the end in the season 2008. He was a participant in training camp alongside the Eskimos in 2009 but was not part of the Eskimos cutting their final roster on June 25, 2009. He was officially re-signed to Eskimos on April 12, 2010. Eskimos the 12th of April, 2010 but was also cut from the training camp on June 7, 2010.

On July 17, 2017, it was announced that Okpro had joined the York Lions as the team’s defensive coordinator, reuniting him with Warren Craney, who was his coach at Concordia.

Professionally, the player was selected to Edmonton Eskimos Edmonton Eskimos in the fourth round of the 2008 CFL Draft and spent parts of three years playing for the team.

Okpro initially played in youth football in the team of Alexander Park as a running back and safety from 1992 until 1997. Then he played for the North Shore Lions during high school from 1998 until 1999 when he made an appearance on the All-Star Team in 1999. He was a part of the North Shore Mustangs from 2000 until 2001, where he served as an Midget League M.V.P. Defense in 2001. He was also on an All-Star Team in both 2000 and 2001. In CEGEP He played for The Vanier College Cheetahs from 2002 until 2003. He was the team’s defense MVP for both seasons, was on his way onto the CEGEP All-Star team in both seasons, and was named one of the CEGEP Rooke of the Year in 2002.

At University, Okpro played for the Concordia Stingers from 2004 to 2007. He was named the Stingers Rookie of the Year in 2004 , and was named a All-Star First Team All Canadian in 2005, 2006, and 2007 as well as being named the team’s MVP in 2007. The first Concordia Stingers football player to receive three All-Canadian distinctions.

Okpro first joined the Edmonton Huskies as the team’s defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator in 2013. He was then promoted to defensive coordinator in 2015 and served in that role for two years.
