Merai was the chair of the Committee on Women’s Rights of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean in 2014.
Merai is an active participant in the Afek Tounes party and joined its central committee in May 2011. Her election as a member of the Constituent Assembly for the constituency of Medenine on the 23rd October of 2011, and was elected to the Constituent Assembly on 23 October. On February 1, 2012 she was elected as to the position of Deputy speaker for the NCA. Following the dissolution of Afek Tounesin 2012, she joined an official participant in the Republican Party, but resigned on July 10, 2013. The party did not elect her again in the 2014 elections for legislative representation.

Samira Merai Friaa (born 10 January 1963) is a Tunisian politician and doctor who was the Minister for Public Health from 2016 to 2017.
Merai began her work in the Abderrahmen-Mami Hospital in Aryanah in 1993. In 2003 she was named as Associate Professor in Respirology of the Faculty of Medicine in Tunis. She is a member of both the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society.
On 2 February 2015, Merai was appointed Minister of Women, Family and Children in the government of Prime Minister Habib Essid. On 20 August 2016, she was appointed Minister of Public Health in the cabinet of Youssef Chahed.
