He later was raised in Walmer close to Dover. He made headlines at the age of 13 when He scored 19 hundred runs in 2003, including 11 in 2003 for Wellesley House School in Broadstairs which was more than double the previous record of runs scored in a single season by the school, which was established by Graham Cowdrey in 1977. He then went to Harrow School on a sports scholarship and was selected on the team 1st XI squad at 14 and was one of the youngest cricketers who played in the Eton V Harrow fixture at Lord’s and the youngest in 60 years to play in the match. Kent County Cricket Club sent coaches to coach his schoolmates instead of having him take a trip to Canterbury. He was a member of the Harrow cricket team travelling throughout Sri Lanka when the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck, being able to escape injury by climbing up to the top of the pavilion in Galle.

Northeast was a member of Kent County Cricket Club from 2007 until 2017, serving as captain of the team in 2016 and the year 2017. In 2005, he was part of the 2nd XI debut, against Derbyshire Second XI, scoring 96. In 2006, he was part of in the John Paul Getty team to face Sri Lankans touring the country who scored the highest score with 62 points against an impressive Sri Lankan side containing international bowlers. In July 2007, he scored one hundred in the match for Harrow to beat Eton in Lord’s.

In 2012 Northeast scored 880 runs at an average of 55, despite at times being relegated to the 2nd XI. He was awarded his county cap in August and was named Kent’s Batsman of the Year after scoring over 1400 runs in all competitions. At the end of the season he signed a new contract for a further year. He scored his first limited over century on 20 June 2013, making 115 against the Sussex Sharks, in a world record run chase in a 40 over match.

Northeast was appointed Kent’s vice-captain in 2014 and acted as the on-field captain for the side throughout most of the 2015 season, including in all one- day matches. He was touted as a future captain by former Kent captain David Fulton and Darren Stevens. He scored 2,007 runs in all formats and was chosen in the Professional Cricketers’ Association Team of 2015.

Northeast was the first to make his Kent debut as a player in the form of a List A cricket match against an international Sri Lanka A team in July 2007, but the game was cancelled before he was given the opportunity to bat. Northeast made his debut as a first-class cricketer for Kent on the 19th of September in the last County Championship game of the season against Durham in Durham at the St Lawrence Ground.

Sam Alexander Northeast (born 16 October 1989) is an English professional cricketer who is a player with Hampshire County Cricket Club. He is an right- handed batsman. Northeast made his debut as a senior player in 2007 and, until 2017, was a member of Kent County Cricket Club. He was captain of Kent’s Kent First XI for most of the 2015 season prior to being appointed officially as club captain in the year 2016. He was captain of the team in 2017, but was removed prior to the start of the 2018 season after he refused to sign a contract extension , committing him to his club for the long-term.

In 2005, Northeast received 7 national awards for his cricket and was awarded one of them being the BBC Test Match Special young cricketer of the year as well as Gray-Nicolls’ best school cricketer awards. He was awarded the Bunbury scholarship and was a member of the England under-15s. A versatile sportsman, Northeast was a national school rackets champion and an official county squash player as well as a cross-country runner. He was invited to trials for county football as well as rugby union. He refused trials for the England Independent Schools football team and also held Kent record-setting age groups in both the 400m and long-jump.

In July 2009 Northeast showed good form for England Under 19s against Bangladesh. In the 2nd Under-19 Test match at Derby he scored 107 in the first innings and 149 in the second innings. He followed this with scores of 123, 41 and 62 in the One Day Internationals, top scoring on each occasion.
