Sam Merriman (born May 5 1961) is an ex- American footballer, who was as a linebacker in the National Football League for five seasons. The seventh selection in the 1983 NFL Draft with the Seattle Seahawks, he played in college football for the University of Idaho in the Big Sky Conference.

In his sixth season of the year 1988 Merriman would have been a potential starting linebacker at inside linebacker. However, he was injured to the knee that ended his career in the second preseason match in the game against Detroit on the Pontiac Silverdome; it occurred when he returned a punt in overtime. Injured reserve was put on his roster, Merriman was let go by the team in April of 1989.

Merriman was a four-year all-conference starter for the Vandals, but went through a coaching change after a disappointing 3–8 season in 1981, his junior year. He came close to transferring to Hawaii, but decided to stay in Moscow under first-time head coach Dennis Erickson.

Merriman was chosen for the Seattle Seahawks in the seventh round of the 1983 NFL Draft, the 177th overall selection. A reserve linebackerin the NFL Draft, Merriman was an exceptional participant on the special team for the duration of five seasons. When he was a rookie in 1983 when the Seahawks defeated Denver easily in the wild card match and then faced favorite Miami in Miami in the Orange Bowl in the divisional round. The game was close with several lead changes, the Seahawks were back in the lead, 24-20, with less than two minutes left. Following the kickoff, Merriman took care of the ball from a Dolphin mistake within the Miami thirty which resulted in the Seattle goal from the field, which was the final score of the sloppy victory.

Growing up within Tucson, Arizona, Merriman was a graduate of the Amphitheater High School in 1979. He played for the University of Idaho within the Big Sky Conference, recruited by the head coach Jerry Davitch, a former Arizona Wildcat lineman and high school head coach in Tucson. Merriman had planned to play in Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, as well as within the Big Sky, but a change in his coaching at the time changed his plans to move further north.
