The youngest son of his died in 1992 at the age of three, following a car accident.
Bagni then played 41 times in his senior Italy national team from 1981 between 1981 and 1987 with five goals. He made his first senior international debut on the 6th of January, 1981, at 1981’s Mundialito in Montevideo with an 1-1 draw against the Netherlands. The first time he scored a goal was for Italy on February 4, 1984, scoring the 5-0 win over Mexico in just 20 seconds. For over 29 years, this is the fastest score achieved in the history of an Italian player at the international level before it was overtaken by one second thanks to Giaccherini’s first goal in a draw of 2-2 against Haiti in 2013. Bagni was originally named one of the 40-man initial Italian teams for the 1982 and 1978 FIFA World Cups, even being part of the unofficial friendly pre-trounament games However, his poor performance eventually led to him being exiled of the squads of the two tournaments, and Italy managed first and fourth place and first-place finishes. Bagni was later part of the Italian 1986 FIFA World Cup squad under manager Enzo Bearzot, but wearing the number-10 shirt.
He later played for Serie B side Avellino for a season (1988–89) before retiring. In total, he scored 52 goals in Serie A.
Bagni was a member of the Italy national team for under-21 football from 1978 to 1980. He scored five goals in his 12 appearances and a hat-trick in a match against Greece. In the team’s under-21 squad Bagni also played in the two UEFA European Under-21 Championships (1978 and 1980) and at the 1984 Summer Olympics in which Italy was fourth after making it to the semi-finals.

Salvatore Bagni (Italian pronunciation: [salva’to:re’banni] 26 September 1956, at Correggio) is an ex- Italian footballer, who mostly played as an attacking midfielder. He is currently employed as director of sports. Bagni was a player for a variety of Italian clubs during his time including Inter and Internazionale, where he took home the Coppa Italia title, and Napoli which he also won the double of a Scudetto and Coppa Italia. At the international level Bagni was a member of Italy at 41 times, and also participated in the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1986 FIFA World Cup.
Bagni started his career with Serie D club Carpi (1975-77) and later joined Serie A side Perugia (1977-1981) and putting up several impressive performances, before transferring to Italian huges Inter (1981-84) in which he was awarded the Coppa Italia in 1982 and was regarded as a possible successor of Gabriele Oriali in midfield.
Bagni is best remembered for his period at Napoli (1984–88), where he won a scudetto-Coppa Italia double in 1987, which included the first of two league titles won by Napoli in its history; at Napoli, Bagni often partnered up with Fernando De Napoli in midfield, as a defensive foil to the club’s star playmaker Diego Maradona.
