In December of 2011, the Nigerian newspaper editors from The Daily Trust awarded Ms. Bazeye its fourth annual “African of the Year” award for her “track record as an incorruptible judicial officer.”
After the 2011 Nigerien coup d’etat, and the resignation of Mamadou Tadja she was appointed to the position of Ms. Bazeye was named by the transitional Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy (CSRD) to be the head of the 11-member Constitutional Council, a consultative High Court during the transition to the Nigerien Seventh Republic.

Salifou Fatimata Bazeye, also called Fatoumata Bazeye and Fatoumata Bazai is an Nigerien jurist ex-magistrate, director of the Supreme Court of Niger and from 2007 until 2009 president of the Constitutional Court of Niger. The decisions of her court regarding the constitutional changes proposed by then the President of Niger Mamadou Tandja, led to her being exiled from the Constitution and the escalating of Niger’s 2009 to 2010 Nigerien constitutional crises. After the events of 2010’s Nigerien coup d’etat, she was made the head of Niger’s transitional Constitutional Court of Niger.
She was the leader of her court to two unanimous rulings in opposition to the President of Niger Mamadou Tandja’s plan to hold a referendum on whether to end the Constitution of Niger and remain in the office until the new constitution was drawn up. The first (non non-binding) decision, made on May 26, 2009, led to the President’s removal from the National Assembly while a further definitive decision was issued on June 12. The President Tandja then implemented his plans to amend the constitution, and removed the Constitutional Court. In February of 2010, he was overthrown in a military coup and power given back to a civilian administration in 2011.
