She was allowed to appear on TV once more in Adriano Celentano’s last installment of Rockpolitik at the end 2005, but producers “forbid” her from speaking about Berlusconi. In July 2008, in front of thousands of onlookers at Piazza Navona, Rome, Guzzanti made contrary remarks about the Pope Benedict XVI, saying that he would be dead in 20 years, and would end up in hell as punishment for the Church’s treatment of homosexuals, saying that he would soon be “tormented by great big demons – and very (sexually) active ones”. Although threatened with punishments of up to five years in prison for these comments, she was not prosecuted. After these events Guzzanti explained her side of the story in the theatrical drama Vilipendio!.
Sabina Guzzanti directed, wrote and starred in Raiot’s first and only installment, which was a late-night television political satire program broadcast on Rai Tre. After mocking Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, she was sued by Berlusconi Mediaset lawyers (not surprisingly Cesare Previti) for “lies, insinuation”, and the show was pulled amid controversy. Previti used the document (“quella cosa, che tende to a sdrammatizzare, a rendere simpatico, a diminuirele tensioni socialei”) to claim that the show wasn’t satirical, but was a political attack. The second instalment of Raiot was recorded in Rome’s Auditorium and broadcast by independent TV networks. Daniele Luttazzi, Beppe Grillo, and Dario Fo supported her during the event. Sabina Guzzanti then announced that Raiot’s only official instalment had disappeared completely from the archives of the RAI.

Guzzanti began her career in television comedy. She appeared in several successful TV shows, including Proffimamente…non-stop (directed and produced by Enzo Trapani), L’araba fenice (directed and produced by Antonio Ricci), La TV delle ragazze, and Scusate l’interruzione. Her imitations of Moana Pozzi, an Italian porn star, earned her the attention of Giuseppe Bertolucci who invited her to appear in his film The Camels (I Cammelli). This was a peak period in her career. She starred in many films and toured Italy with her own comedy shows, including Non io: Sabina e le altre (1991) and Con fervido zelo (1994). The 1998 short Donna selvaggia was her first attempt at directing.
As a form of protest against the censorship imposed on Raiot, Sabina Guzzanti shot her side of the story in the film Viva Zapatero (2005) in which she condemns the lack of freedom of expression in Italy. Viva Zapatero! premiered at Venice Film Festival and was met with acclaim. The movie has also been invited to screen at a number of other International Film Festival: Tribeca Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival and San Sebastian.
