S. Suresh Babu Biography

S. Suresh Babu is one of the most popular and richest Oceanographer who was born on March 14, 1976 in Kerala, India. Babu was born in Kerala, south India on March 14, 1976. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University College Thiruvananthapuram of University of Kerala. In 1998, he received a MSc in Physics. He then continued at the University to earn an MPhil in 2000. He enrolled at the same university to study for his doctoral studies. In 2005, he completed his PhD research at Vikram Shabhai Space Center (VSSC). He then joined the Space Physics Laboratory at VSSC, where he is now the Aerosols and Radiative Forcing Section Head.

Babu’s research was primarily focused on atmospheric aerosols. His works are reported to have contributed to a better understanding of black carbon aerosols, their radiative effects on climate change and atmospheric stability. ResearchGate, an online repository of scientific articles, lists 169 of his articles. He has also contributed chapters to three books and edited thirty- two proceedings. He was invited to speak at the Joint Workshop on Polar Research 2013, jointly organized by the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research.

Babu was appointed to the technical expert panel when the Ministry of Earth Sciences established the National Facility for Airborne Research in 2013 under the direction of the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. As the resource person for INSPIRE internships of the Department of Science and Technology, and as the reviewer of funding proposals of the Ministry of Earth Sciences and Department of Science and Technology and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, he has been a member of the technical expert committee. He has also been a member or former member of many government and institutional committees, including the steering review committee of Space Borne Lidar Project of VSSC and the technical evaluation committee of CAIPEEX Program of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology. The critical design review and review committee of NEMO-AM Satellites of Space Applications Centre. He is also the expert committee responsible for the preparation of project reports for Environmental monitoring satellite of Indian Space Research Organization. He was also an institution member of two VSSC research programs, namely Investigations in atmospheric aerosols over the Arctic during summer and their characterization which ended in 2012, and Characterization in Polar Aerosols – Source processes and climate impacts which will end in 2018.

Elsevier also presented him with a Young Scientist Award. He was elected to the Indian National Science Academy’s Indian National Young Academy of Science in 2015. He was also awarded the Swarna Jayanti Fellowship of Department of Science and Technology in 2015. The fellowship is valid until 2020. He was awarded the Shanti Bhatnagar prize by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, one of the most prestigious Indian science awards.
