Ryan Keith Whiting, born November 24, 1986, is an American track and fields athlete. He competes in shot put and holds a personal record at 22.28 meters outdoor and 22.35 indoors. First place at the 2012 World Indoor Championships was his greatest international senior success. He represented the United States at three World Championships in Athletics in 2013, 2013 World Championships in Athletics and the 2012 London Olympics.
While still attending Arizona State University, Whiting signed up for Nike Inc. in 2010. He began competing on the American track-and-field circuit that year. At the 2010 USA Indoor Championships, Whiting finished second to Christian Cantwell and was fifth at the USA Outdoors. After graduating from Arizona State University in 2010, Whiting began to pursue shot putting full time. Whiting returned to Pennsylvania and became a volunteer coach for the Penn State University track & field team. Whiting won his first national title at 2011 USA Indoor Championships. He easily beat Dan Taylor, who was second. Whiting finished fourth at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships 2011, but Cantwell was automatically entered as the defending champion. Whiting did however earn a spot at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. He was seventh in the final of the men’s shot throw. He was also a strong performer on the IAAF Diamond League circuit. He finished in the top three on the Lausanne, Zurich, and Doha legs in 2011. Ryan was the USA indoor runner up in 2012.
He established his place among the world’s top throwers with a win at the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships, winning the gold medal with a throw of 22 m (72 ft 2 in). He did not match this form outdoors that year, but still managed a number of podium finishes on the 2011 IAAF Diamond League circuit (Shanghai, Stockholm and Zürich). His best outdoor throw of the year came at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials, where his mark of 21.66 m brought him second place behind Reese Hoffa. Representing the United States at the Olympics for the first time, he reached his second outdoor global final, this time placing ninth with a mark of 20.64 m.
Whiting finished 1st in the Shot Put on 7 March 2014 at the 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships.
He competed for Arizona State University for four years and earned nine NCAA All-American honors. He also won six NCAA titles (three indoor shotput, two outdoor shotput, and one discus) over the course of his career. He was named the American Indoor Performer of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for 2008. He was also a star on the track and in his studies. He was twice selected for the second team of Academic All-America student-athletes and earned a variety of Pac-10 and USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.

Ryan Whiting, the son Kent and Jill Whiting, was born in Harrisburg. Whiting was a student at Central Dauphin High School, and began competing in shot throw and discus throw as a teenager. Whiting made his international debut in 2005 at the Pan American Junior Athletics Championships. He won both of his events with personal records. He was named the Gatorade Male Track & Field Athlete and the Year by Gatorade, which ranked him as the best American high school track-and fielder. He entered the senior ranks with a shot put throw of 19 metres. He placed eighth at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
In 2006, he began a civil engineering major at Arizona State University and started competing for the Arizona State Sun Devils athletically in 2007. He set a new indoor record for Arizona State University, rising to 20.01 m (65 ft 7 /4 inches) and taking third place in the NCAA Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship. He was fourth at the NCAA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship and third at the Pac-10 Championships. His shot record was 20.35m (66 feet 9 inches).
