Max was born in Leningrad, Soviet Union (now Saint Petersburg), in 1954. His parents were part of the Soviet intelligence. Then he sought political asylum in Vienna in the process of relocating to Israel. Then, he enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He was naturalized United States citizen in 1986 when the lawful change of the name of his son in the name of Leon Max.

Then, in 2010, the entrepreneur bought the house that was previously belonging to Madonna within the Hollywood Hills, near the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles, California.

He was divorced twice. His second wife was Ame Austin, an American model and stylist. In 2014, he married Yana Boyko, a Ukrainian model.
