He earned a first senior Scotland call-up for Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus and Kazakhstan in November 2019, but did not play in either fixture.
In a 2017-18 Scottish League Cup group match against Montrose, he made his debut for Hibernian. In his second appearance for Hibs he scored two goals, in a 6-1 victory against Arbroath. Porteous was a regular player in the senior squad that season (he was a substitute for six Scottish Premiership matches), but he also played in the club’s Under-20s. His campaign ended with a ‘double- double’ of the SPFL Development League as well as the Scottish Youth Cup.

Porteous was born in Dalkeith, Midlothian. He supported Hibernian as a child and went to Dalkeith High School. After making a name for himself in the Hibernian youth program, Porteous was loaned out to Edinburgh City during the 2016-17 season. Porteous scored the goals that secured victories for Edinburgh against Annan Athletic (their debut in the SPFL) as well as Arbroath.
Porteous was selected in the Scotland Under-19 Squad for the elite round qualification for 2017 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. In 2018, he made his debut for the Under-21 Team at the Toulon Tournament.
During October 2018, Porteous signed a new contract with Hibernian, due to run until the summer of 2023. He suffered a knee injury in January 2019 that required surgery, which prevented him from playing for the rest of the 2018–19 season.
