Odom started his coaching career at South Florida as a graduate assistant. Odom also worked as an assistant coach at Furman, UNC Asheville and American before joining the staff of Seth Greenberg at Virginia Tech for seven years. He joined the coaching staff in Charlotte as an assistant coach for five years and was interim head coach.
Odom managed a 14-win improvement on the Retrievers’ 7-25 season, leading to a 21-13 overall record and fifth place in the America East Conference. These 21 wins are the second-most school history. UMBC was awarded a bid to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament 2017. It won its matchup against Fairfield in the first round, making it the first win in postseason history. The Retrievers then defeated St. Francis (PA), advanced past Liberty to the CIT quarterfinals, and lost to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in semifinals.
The 2017–18 regular season saw the Retrievers finish in second place in the America East, with a 12–4 record, and earning the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament when it knocked off Vermont 65–62 in the 2018 America East Men’s Basketball Tournament final, earning its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. During the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the Retrievers became the first #16 seed ever to defeat a #1 seed in the first round with a 74–54 victory over Virginia. After the historic win, the Retrievers would lose in the second round to Kansas State, 50–43.
