Ruth Manorama, the oldest of five daughters and three boys, was born to Dorothy Dhanraj on 30 May 1952. Her parents were Dorothy Dhanraj (a teacher) and Paul Dhanraj (a postal worker). Her parents converted to Christianity in order to escape the worst caste oppression. Manorama was raised seeing her parents involved in social work. Dorothy, her mother, fought against her conservative family to allow Manorama to receive an education. She became a teacher and advocated for women’s educational rights. Pandita RAMabai heavily influenced Dorothy’s choice to name her daughter Manorama after Pandita’s second child, Mano. Paul, her father, successfully mobilized economically disadvantaged residents of nearby villages to fight for the rights to their land. They had been living on it for generations. Manorama’s parents encouraged Manorama and her sisters to become educated and self-sufficient.

Manorama led procesions of more than 150,000 people in protest against the State Government of Karnataka’s ‘Operation Demolition,’ which was a forced expulsion campaign. She and other activists demanded that those evicted be protected and allowed to live legally and with dignity. Manorama, on behalf of the slum residents, fought against Karnataka’s move to block their rights at the Supreme Court of India and the High Court.

She first entered the political scene as an independent candidate in the Bharathi Nagar constituency in 2004. She gained 1.61% of the vote share.

Manorama was also one among the thousand nominees for the 1,000 Peace Women for Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

Since the 1980s, Manorama has been working to mobilize the poor at the grass- root level. She has been involved in the mobilization, training, and empowerment of women in more than 120 slums to help them deal with violence and discrimination. Ruth is committed to the cause for the emancipation and advancement of Dalits. She was a part of many struggles for human rights, land rights, and the cause of Dalit women. Her contributions greatly contributed to the mainstreaming Dalit issues.
