Mace was born in London, England on 9th October 1961 to David Mace (and Angela Mace). She attended South Hampstead High School in London, which was an independent all-girls school. Westminster School is an independent school located within the precincts Westminster Abbey, with a sixth form that is mixed-sex. She graduated from Wadham College in Oxford with a Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) in 1983 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree (DPhil), in 1987. “The dawn chorus: Behavioural organization in the great Tit (Parus major),” was her doctoral thesis.

Mace delivered the Curl Lecture in 2003, which was a prize lectureship at the Royal Anthropological Institute. She was elected Fellow of the British Academy in 2008, the United Kingdom’s national academy for social sciences and humanities.

Mace was appointed to the Department of Anthropology at University College London in 1991. She was a Royal Society University Research Fellow, Lecturer, and Reader on Human Evolutionary Ecology between 1999 and 2004. After meeting Mark Pagel at University College in 1994, Mace co-authored “The Comparative Method in Anthropology”. This used phylogenetic methods for analysing human cultures. It was a pioneering field of science that used evolutionary trees or phylogenies in anthropology to explain human behavior.

After completing her doctorate, Mace started her academic career at Imperial College London as a research fellow. She also held a NERC Postdoctoral Fellowship. From 1989 to 1991 she was a lecturer at the School of Development Studies, University of East Anglia.

In 2004, she was appointed Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology. From 2005 to 2010, she was also Editor-in-Chief of Evolution and Human Behavior. From 2018, she was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Evolutionary Human Sciences. Since 2010, she has served as Head of Biological Anthropology at University College London.
