Ruth- Ann Boyle, born 26 April 1970 in Sunderland, England, is an English pop singer. She formed the British band Olive with Robin Taylor-Firth and Tim Kellett, producers. On its second release, in 1997, the single “You’re Not Alone”, reached number one in the UK Singles Chart.

Their collaboration was so successful that they recorded a solo album. This was later produced in A.R.T. Studios in Ibiza, late 2004. The album was titled “What about Us?” The album was finally released digitally in June 2007, after many delays.

Influenced by singers like Rickie Lee Jones and Joni Mitchell, Boyle joined various bands from age 17–19, but these turned out to be unpleasant experiences (“folk bands, Rickie Lee Jones and stuff like that, all the angst”). In the intervening time, she performed assembly-line work in factories before ending up managing a pub in Sheffield. Meanwhile, she also recorded vocal samples for The Durutti Column, the Manchester-based musical project headed by Vini Reilly.

She sang the lead vocals for Enigma’s 1999 album The Screen Behind the Mirror. The latter was also released as single. Voyageur, their 2003 album, also featured her guest vocals.

Boyle met Michael Cretu during the production of Olive’s second album, titled Trickle. Cretu was the mastermind behind Enigma’s 1990s top new age/pop band. He had heard one her song (Miracle) and invited Boyle to join him on his fourth concept album, The Screen Behind the Mirror (1999). Boyle performed the lead vocals for two tracks on the album. One of the tracks was released as the lead single, “Gravity Of Love”. Boyle then performed the role of a female vocalist on the Voyageur album in late 2003. It featured tracks “Boumboum” (commercial pop) and “Following the Sun”.

Boyle, however, was contemplating a career as a nurse at the time Kellett heard them singing on a keyboard during a live performance with The Durutti Column. Boyle auditioned and found the band a perfect musical partnership. From 1995 to 2000 when the band was founded, Olive released two albums. The group ceased to exist after that.

Her first solo album What about Us?, produced by Michael Cretu of Enigma, was only released as a digital download via iTunes in 2007, quoting a lack of necessary project support and co-ordination to produce physical copies of the album.
