In 1981-82, he made 54 more appearances. Then, he led the “Valiants to promotion in 1982-1983 with 2 goals in 49 matches. Along with his teammates Phil Sproson and Geoff Hunter, he was named in the PFA Team Of The Year 1982-83. Robbie Earle rated him an excellent captain after he served as club captain.
Bromage posted 46 appearances in 1984–85, finding the net in a league win over Stockport County and an FA Cup victory over Scunthorpe United. His consistency won him a place on the PFA Team of the Year for a second time. He won his second promotion with the club in 1985–86, posting 51 appearances and scoring one goal, again against Scunthorpe. The 1986–87 campaign would be his last with the club, and he played 51 games, scoring one goal in a defeat at Walsall. He played a total of 402 games for the club in all competitions, scoring 15 goals.
He was sold to Terry Cooper’s Bristol City for £25,000 (and Lawrie Pearson) in August 1987. His Port Vale testimonial match was held against rivals Stoke on 13 April 1986, Vale lost the game 1–0. City reached the Third Division play- offs in 1987–88, however lost out to Walsall in the final. An eleventh-place finish followed in 1988–89, before promotion was finally won under Joe Jordan in 1989–90, as City finished in second place, two points behind rivals Bristol Rovers. In all he played 46 league games for the club, scoring one goal.
Bromage played thirty games in 1979-80. He was a fringe player under Dennis Butler, Alan Bloor and eventually made his way into the first team of John McGrath. He scored again past Doncaster Rovers and added the third goal in a 3-0 victory at Vale Park in his final match of the season. In 1980-81, he scored five goals in 52 matches. He also scored a goal in a League Cup match with Tranmere Rovers. He was promoted from midfield to left-full-back and his performances there earned him the Club’s Player of the Year award.

- He was with the Third Division club under Bobby Smith. In 1977-78, he made eight appearances for the club as they were relegated to the Fourth Division. Then he scored in a 2-2 draw against Scunthorpe United on the first day 1978-1979, before scoring again on the 12th September in a 3-1 victory at Doncaster Rovers. He ended 1978-79 with two goals in twenty matches.
From 1977 to 1987, he spent ten seasons with Port Vale. He won the Player of the year award in 1980-81 and was named on the PFA Team Of The Year (Fourth Division), in 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86, when the club was promoted from the Fourth Division in both 1982-83 & 1985-86. He played in 402 games, scoring 15 goals. He was also on loan to Oldham Athletic for a short time in 1983. In August 1987, he was sold to Bristol City for PS25,000. This helped the club win promotion from the Third Division in 1989-1990. In 1990-91, he moved to Brighton & Hove Albion where he spent a season. He was then loaned to Maidstone United. He also managed Whitehawk and joined Southwick in non-league football.
However he refused to sign a new contract for the 1983–84 season, as did teammates Geoff Hunter, Barry Siddall, and Terry Armstrong. He eventually walked out on the club, and played two Second Division games for Oldham Athletic in October. However he returned to Vale Park in November, and agreed to sign a new contract. He went on to finish the campaign with 42 appearances, scoring one goal against Wigan Athletic, as the club were relegated under new manager John Rudge.
