His best result as a doubles player was when he reached the semi-finals at Bordeaux with Carl Limberger in 1985. He was a doubles player at the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon Championships. He and Harald Rittersbacher, his only appearance at Wimbledon in 1987, were drawn against Yannick Noah and Guy Forget in the first round.

Barlow was a professional tennis player on the international circuit in the 1980s. He won the GWA Mazda Tennis Classic in Brisbane, 1983. Wojciech Fibak was the 1985 Grand Prix de Tennis de Toulouse. Magnus Gustafsson was seventh at the 1988 Donnay Indoor Championships. He was the only Australian Open qualifier to the main draw for a Grand Slam. However, he lost the first round against West German Carl-Uwesteeb.
Barlow, a Toowoomba left-handed player, was twice runner-up in the Australian Junior Championships under-14s and under-16s age categories. At the 1980 Australian Open, he reached the quarter-finals in the boys’ event.
A member of the ATP board in the 1990s, Barlow also worked as an ATP executive in Montreal. He is now involved in coaching.
