Russell Paul Springer, born November 7, 1968, is a former Major League Baseball relief pitch. Springer made his major-league debut with the New York Yankees on April 17, 1992. Springer also pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies, as well as the Houston Astros, St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics. He was part of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ 2001 World Series win team and was also a Houston Astros member when they reached the World Series in 2005.

The Cardinals signed Springer again before the 2007 season. He was 8-1 in 2007 with a 2.18 ERA with the Cardinals. Springer signed with Oakland Athletics on January 29, 2009. The Tampa Bay Rays claimed Springer off waivers on August 8, 2009.

Springer was involved with Barry Bonds in an incident that occurred May 16, 2006. Bonds, who had 713 career homers at the time, one short of tieing Babe Ruth for 2nd place on the career home run list, was struck in the shoulder by a Springer pitch. Springer and Astros manager Phil Garner were then removed from the field. As he was leaving the field, he received a standing ovation from Astro fans. This led to criticisms from Felipe Alou, Giants manager, and Jon Miller, broadcaster. For the incident, Springer was suspended four games and Garner one.

Springer was drafted in the 7th round by the New York Yankees 1989 Major League Baseball Draft. He signed immediately with the Yankees following the draft in June 1989. Springer was traded to the Yankees by J. T. Snow, Jerry Nielsen and Jim Abbott on December 6, 1992. He was traded to the Phillies by the Angels along with Kevin Flora on August 15, 1995 for Dave Gallagher. He signed with the Houston Astros during the 1996-97 offseason.

Springer was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 1997 MLB expansion draft. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves by the Diamondbacks on June 23, 1998 for Alan Embree. He won the game six of 1999 NLCS in Atlanta. This win clinched the Braves the pennant. He signed with the Diamondbacks after the 1999 season. In 2002-03, he was a free agent and signed with the Cardinals. On July 15, 2010, Springer signed with the Cincinnati Reds. The agreement called for Springer to join the Reds’ Triple-A team, the Louisville Bats, for a prep assignment prior to possibly joining the Reds. The Reds’ general manager, Walt Jocketty, was also the general manager for the Cardinals during Springer’s two stints there. On August 2, 2010 Springer was called up by the Reds from Louisville, replacing Carlos Fisher on the active roster.
