From June 2017 to his term’s end on 1 July 2019, he was a Member for the East Midlands of the European Parliament.
Helmer said that he would not stand down until Matthews was confirmed and the position clarified. According to reports, the Conservative party was looking into golliwog dolls that were featured on the cover of a book about political correctness published in Bretwalda Books. Later, it was revealed that Matthews had not been involved in the publication of the book. Helmer, who was an MEP until March 2012, defected to UKIP. He was re-elected in 2014.
In 2014, Matthews took up a position as National Campaigns Director at Better Off Out. He led Better Off Out’s campaign for Britain to Leave the European Union, liaising with the official campaign (Vote Leave) as well as with Leave.EU and Grassroots Out. During this time, he supervised the production of leaflets, posters and other campaign materials as well as organising their distribution to the public in the run up to the 2016 European Union membership referendum.
For the 2014 European Parliament election Matthews was again placed third on the Conservative party list for the East Midlands and, again, missed being elected.
Roger Helmer, MEP for East Midlands Region, announced on 12 October 2011 that he would be resigning from the European Parliament at year’s end. Matthews, who was the next Conservative party member in the East Midlands, is expected to replace Helmer.
