Rudi Balling (born 17 October 1953 in Daun, Rhineland-Palatinate) is a German geneticist. He is the director of the University of Luxembourg’s Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine.

From 2001 to 2009, Balling was the Scientific Director of Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research. (HZI) was formerly known as Gesellschaft fur Biotechnologische Forschung (GBF). He is also an honorary professor at Technical University of Braunschweig. The center’s focus shifted to infection research, which was previously part of biotechnology under his leadership.

Rudi Balling received his Habilitation in 1991 and was named leader of a team at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology, Freiburg. He was the Director of the Institute for Mammalian Genetics, GSF-Research Centre for Health and the Environment from 1993 to 2000 (renamed Helmholtz Zentrum Munchen). He was awarded an exceptional professorship at RWTH Aachen in 1994, and then the Chair of Developmental Genetics at Technical University of Munich in 1998.

There he worked on clarifying the morphogenetic processes during development.

In September 2009 Rudi Balling became Director of the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB).
