He was last seen as a right-winger for ADO Den Haag (Norwegian Eredivisie). Between 2012 and 2013, he also represented the Netherlands on seven occasions, scoring two goals.

Schaken had his squad number changed from 7 to 27 prior to the 2011-12 season. Schaken had to wait more than a year before scoring his first goal for the club. He opened the scoring with a 4-0 loss to De Graafschap in September 2011. After Sekou Cisse had opened the scoring, Feyenoord scored Schaken’s second goal in a 2-0 win over PSV Eindhoven at De Kuip on 4/12/11. Schaken scored goals against De Graafschap and NAC Breda in four of five Eredivisie games. Feyenoord was awarded runners-up and entry to the Champions League.

In the third qualifying round for entrance into the group stages of the Champions League, Schaken opened the scoring for Feyenoord at Dynamo Kyiv in the first leg on 31 July 2012; Feyenoord eventually fell 2–1 in the game and 3–1 on aggregate after a 0–1 loss in the Netherlands. Schaken scored his first goal of the Eredivisie campaign on the opening matchday on 18 August, netting a late equalizer against Heerenveen, who had taken the lead from the penalty spot following a red card from Joris Mathijsen. On 25 November, Schaken scored a late goal for Feyenoord, as the Rotterdam club secured a 2–0 away victory at AZ Alkmaar.

After a bye in the first round, Feyenoord started the 2013–14 KNVB Cup on 26 September 2013, at home against FC Dordrecht in the second round. They won the game 3–0; Graziano Pellè scored first as Schaken and Samuel Armenteros added a goal each to the scoreline in the second half. In the first Eredivisie game following the winter break, Schaken scored two goals in a 5–2 away win against FC Utrecht 19 January 2014.

Schaken, who had previously been trained at the academies Ajax Amsterdam and AZ Almaar, started his professional career with SC Cambuur. He played 75 matches before being signed to Eerste Divisie side BVveendam. After three seasons at Veendam, Schaken made more than 100 appearances and was awarded the Jupiler League’s Best Player award for 2007-2008. After Veendam’s contract expired, Schaken was signed to a VVV-Venlo 2-year contract. He helped the team win the league title in his first season, earning them promotion to the Eredivisie.

He played the full game in the Netherlands disappointing 0–0 draw with rivals Germany on 14 November 2012. Schaken ensured the Netherlands continued their perfect record for World Cup qualification, netting the final goal in a 3–0 defeat of Estonia on 22 March 2013. Schaken’s goal against Estonia was the 1500th scored by an Oranje player at the senior international level.
