Goodman pleaded guilty in 2003 to operating Royana, a trailer-sailer yacht 24 feet long, while impaired by alcohol. Goodman ran the small yacht aground at Calshot Spit near Southampton.

Goodman directed the premiere of Jonas Forssell’s Tradgarden (The Garden), at the Drottningholm Theatre in Stockholm in July 1999. This was the first modern opera to be performed there.

Roy Goodman’s special talent as a conductor is what made him a well-known performer of early music. He often conducted from the organ, harpsichord, or violin. He was the conductor of Reading Youth Orchestra (1974-1976), the founder and director of Brandenburg Consort (1975-192001), the co-director of Parley of Instruments (1979-1986), principal conductor of Hanover Band (1986-1994), and music director of European Union Baroque Orchestra (1989-192004). He is the Principal Guest Conductor for the English Chamber Orchestra as well as the Director Emeritus for the European Union Baroque Orchestra. Over 100 orchestras, ensembles and opera companies have had him as their Guest Conductor. He made his debut in 2006 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam. He was a concertmaster and violinist who played from 1975 to 1985 with Ivan Fischer, John Eliot Gardiner and Charles Mackerras. He was the viola damore soloist at the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, under Neville Marriner, and the Philharmonia Orchestra, under Vladimir Ashkenazy. He has played solo or as concertmaster (on baroque violin) with Frans Bruggen and Philippe Herreweghe, Christopher Hogwood and Trevor Pinnock.

Roy Goodman made his New Zealand debut in 2007, performing a series of Baroque concerts. Following the enthusiastic response of audiences and critics, he accepted the position of Principal Guest Conductor for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, which he held until 2011. In 2010, he made his debut at the Sydney Opera House with three concerts, and in 2011 he was affectionately named the “Rafa Nadal of conductors” by Radio New Zealand. He has three children and five grandchildren.
