She then made it off-limits to hunters, loggers and other users. Since then, she has donated 70,000 acres of her land to a new National Park in Maine. Another donation of 30,000 acres would be administered as a state park, and allow for activities like hunting and snowmobiling. Some Mainers were initially opposed to this plan, including Paul LePage, the Maine Governor at the time, and Susan Collins, the Maine senators Angus King & Susan Collins. After a series of listening sessions, meetings and discussions that demonstrated positive intentions and the economic benefits that a new national monument would bring, public opinion changed to be positive. Quimby donated 87,000 acres of her land, valued at $60million, to the U.S. Department of the Interior in August

2016. She also contributed $20 million cash to support operations. This transfer was necessary to establish a national monument. On August 24, 2016, the National Monument Katahdin Woods and Waters was created. This was the day before the 100th anniversary celebrations of the National Park Service.
