In January 2015 Powell made his List A debut, playing for the Combined Campuses in the 2014-15 Regional Super50 against Guyana. Powell took 3/20 runs and scored 31 runs in his debut match. He was also named man of the Match. Powell was playing for Guyana against Jamaica in the 2015-16 Regional Four Day Competition. This was his first-class debut. He returned to the Combined Campuses for the 2015-16 Regional Super50. He scored two half-centuries in his team’s last two matches: 71 against Windward Islands and 64 against Guyana. He was a crucial part of Jamaica’s progress to the final of 2016-17 Regional Super50. He smashed 95 runs using 45 balls, including 9 sixes and 6 fours, in the semi-final against Trinidad and Tobago. After taking 5-36, these were career-best List A performances that earned him the man-of-the match award. In the sixth round of the 2017 CPL player draft, he was selected by Jamaica Tallawahs.
He was purchased by the Kolkata Knight Riders team in February 2017 for 30 lakhs.
In February 2018, the International Cricket Council (ICC) named Powell as one of the ten players to watch ahead of the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament. Following the conclusion of the Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament, the ICC named Powell as the rising star of the West Indies’ squad. When the West Indies toured Bangladesh in December 2018 he was named as captain of the ODI squad.
