Rostislav Grigorchuk is one of the most popular and richest Mathematician who was born on February 23, 1953 in Vyshnivets, Ukraine. Grigorchuk was born in Ternopil Oblast on February 23, 1953. He is now Ukraine (in 1953, part of the USSR). Moscow State University gave him his undergraduate degree in 1975. In 1978, he was awarded a PhD (Candidate of Science in Mathematics) from Moscow State University. His thesis advisor was Anatolym M. Stepin. Grigorchuk was awarded a habilitation degree (Doctor of Science), in Mathematics at the Moscow Steklov Institute of Mathematics. Rostislav Grigorchuk was a professor at Moscow State University of Transportation in the 1980s and 1990s. He also held positions at the Steklov Institute of Mathematics, Moscow State University, and the Steklov Institute of Mathematics. Grigorchuk was appointed Professor of Mathematics to Texas A&M University in 2002. He was then promoted to the rank Distinguished Professor in 2008.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Grigorchuk focused a lot of his work on the theory of automata, branches and self-similar groups. He also explored these connections. Grigorchuk and co-authors obtained, for example, a counter- example of Michael Atiyah’s conjecture about L-betti numbers in closed manifolds.

Rostislav Grigorchuk gave an invited address at the 1990 International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto an AMS Invited Address at the March 2004 meeting of the American Mathematical Society in Athens, Ohio and a plenary talk at the 2004 Winter Meeting of the Canadian Mathematical Society.

In June 2003 an international group theory conference in honor of Grigorchuk’s 50th birthday was held in Gaeta, Italy. Special anniversary issues of the “International Journal of Algebra and Computation” and of the journal “Algebra and Discrete Mathematics” were dedicated to Grigorchuk’s 50th birthday.

Grigorchuk is best known for creating the finitely generated intermediate growth group. This group is often called the Grigorchuk Group (sometimes also known as the first Grigorchuk Group, since Grigorchuk also created several other groups that are commonly studied). This group shows exponential growth, but it is faster than polynomial. Grigorchuk created this group in 1980 and demonstrated that it can have intermediate growth in 1984. This result solved a long-standing problem that John Milnor had in 1968 regarding the existence finitely generated intermediate growth groups. Grigorchuk’s group also has some other amazing mathematical properties. It is a finitely created infinite residually finite 2-group. This means that every element has a finite order, which is a power 2. It is also the finitely generated first group that is both amenable and not elementary amenable. This is a solution to a long-standing problem, which Mahlon Day posed in 1957. Grigorchuk’s group “just infinite” also means that it is infinite, but each proper quotient is finite.

Rostislav Ilvanovich Grigorchuk (Russian name: Rostislav Ivanovich Gregoryuk; born February 23, 1953) was a Soviet and Russian mathematician who works in the field of group theory. He is a Distinguished Professor at Texas A&M University’s Mathematics Department. Grigorchuk is well-known for his 1984 paper that presented the first example finitely generated group with intermediate growth. This solved a problem that John Milnor had posed in 1968. The Grigorchuk group is now known. It is an important object in geometric group theory, especially in the study branch groups and automata groups.

Grigorchuk is also well-known for his contributions to general theory of random walks and theory of amenable group, especially for obtaining in 1980 what is now known (see for instance ) as Grigorchuk’s co-growth criteria of amenability for finitely created groups.

Grigorchuk’s group is a central object in the study of the so-called branch groups and automata groups. These are finitely generated groups of automorphisms of rooted trees that are given by particularly nice recursive descriptions and that have remarkable self-similar properties. The study of branch, automata and self-similar groups has been particularly active in the 1990s and 2000s and a number of unexpected connections with other areas of mathematics have been discovered there, including dynamical systems, differential geometry, Galois theory, ergodic theory, random walks, fractals, Hecke algebras, bounded cohomology, functional analysis, and others. In particular, many of these self-similar groups arise as iterated monodromy groups of complex polynomials. Important connections have been discovered between the algebraic structure of self-similar groups and the dynamical properties of the polynomials in question, including encoding their Julia sets.
