Rossana Lacayo is one of the most popular and richest Photographer who was born on September 3, 1956 in Managua, Managua Department, Nicaragua. Rossana Lacayo de Herguedas, also known as Rossana Lacayo, is a Nicaraguan filmmaker, scriptwriter and photographer. She was born on 3 September 1956. According to the Nicaraguan Cultural Institute, she is considered a pioneer in Nicaraguan cinema. She founded Gota Films (Nicaragua), an independent film company, in 2003. She is a member of ANCI, the Nicaraguan Association of Cinematography. Lacayo lives in Nicaragua with her family.

Karly Gaitan Morales (Nicaraguan film historian) says that Lacayo began working as a professional filmmaker in 1982. She met and worked alongside international movie directors such as Miguel Littin from Chile as part of INCINE. Working with actors and filmmakers from Cuba, France, Mexico, and France gives her a lot of experience. Estos si pasaran (1984), her first documentary as director, was screened at the film festivals in Canada (Sweden) and Mexico. The film was also chosen for the Academy Awards’ 58th Edition (1985).

In the early 1980s, she returned to Nicaraguan as a photographer for the newly established Ministry of Culture. She traveled to El Salvador in 1982 to report on the war as a photographer. She has said that she nearly lost her life. She was transferred to INCINE, Nicaraguan Institute for Cinematography (in Spanish, Instituto Nicaraguense de Cine), in 1983. There she began working in the documentary production section and quickly became its chief.

Rossana Lacayo was a Managua native, but she attended high school in Managua and graduated from Madeira School (1975), Virginia, USA. She graduated from Duke University in North Carolina with a degree of Economy (1979) after graduating high school. She graduated in 2010 with a degree as Documentary Production (in Spanish Documental de Creacion), from the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos in Mexico. She studied economics, but she stated her interest in photography from a young age. She was a photographer for her school’s newspaper during her university years.

Although Lacayo spent most of her adult life working as a filmmaker she never gave up photography. It is something she considers her passion, and which she continued to do during her time at INCINE in the 1980s. From all of the projects she was involved, she shot many movie stills. Lacayo began to take photos of daily life in La Chureca, which is the dumpster located in Managua and one of the largest in Nicaragua in the early 2000s. The World Bank selected Lacayo to take part in 2012 with four photos of the dumpster in an exhibit called El Cambio in Washington DC. She made a documentary about the same subject in 2013 titled San Francisco de La Chureca (2013).

On 1 March 2008, Rossana Lacayo received Order of the Cultural Independence Rubén Darío for her work as a pioneer of the Nicaraguan cinema – an award given by the Nicaraguan government to outstanding individuals.
