Roshan Mahanama is one of the most popular and richest Cricketer who was born on May 31, 1966 in Colombo, Western, Sri Lanka. Deshabandu Roshan Siriwardene Mahanama (Sinhala: rossaan mhaanaam ; born 31 May 1966 in Colombo) is a former Sri Lankan cricketer and a former ICC match referee. He was an integral part of the 1996 Cricket World Cup winning team from Sri Lanka. He is the first person to serve as match referee for a Test match on a day-night.
Mahanama resigned as the match referee for the New Zealand v Australia test. He joined the elite panel in 2004, and has been a referee in 61 Tests, 35 T20Is, and 222 ODIs until 15 September. This includes three World Cups and a Champions Trophy 2009. Mahanama was the first match referee in the history to act in a day-night Test match. The pink ball was also used for the first times.
Following his retirement from international cricket in 1999, Roshan Mahanama made the transition into becoming an International Cricket Council match referee. He made his debut as a match referee in the ODI between West Indies and Bangladesh in Kingstown 2004. In the same series, he made his Test debut and to date, he has refereed in 61 Tests. On 21 October 2014 during ODI series between New Zealand and South Africa, Roshan Mahanama entered the elite group of match referees who have officiated 200+ matches.
In September 2015, Mahanama said that he would step down from the ICC match referee panel at the end of the year; he will spend his time with his family and his businesses.
“Retired hurt” is a common term in cricket. However, Roshan Mahanama, formerly of Sri Lanka, chose that name for his biography to reflect his feelings after being ruled out of the Tests and One-dayers. This was following their disastrous performance in the 1999 World Cup.

In the 1980s and early 1990s, Mahanama was a stylish opening batsman under the captaincy Aravinda De Silva. Roshan Mahanama, M.A.R. and Aravinda de Silva were selected as the opening batsmen in 1992 Cricket World Cup. Samarasekera & U.C. Hathurusingha scored 59 runs on 89 balls v.s. This record was surpassed in July 2006 as the largest partnership in Test match history by fellow Sri Lankans Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene who put on 624 against South Africa. The partnership between Jayasuriya-Mahanama still stood as the highest partnership for the second wicket in Test cricket.
