- She is vice president and first lady in Nicaragua. She is married to Daniel Ortega, the current president. Six years after the overthrow of the Somoza dynasty by the Sandinista Nation Liberation Front (FSLN), she was first lady. Murillo was the Nicaraguan government’s spokesperson, minister to the government, head of the SandinistaAssociation of Cultural Workers and Communications Coordinator for the Council on Communication and Citizenry. On 10 January 2017, she was sworn into office as the vice president of Nicaragua.
Murillo stood by Ortega after her daughter Zoilamerica, who accused Ortega of sexual abuse in 1990s. This still has an impact on her reputation among Nicaraguans. Zoilamerica attempted to take legal action but Ortega was exempted from prosecution because he was a member the National Assembly.
Murillo started to gain power politically in 1998 after defending Ortega after he was accused by his stepdaughter, Murillo’s daughter, of sexually abusing her for many years. Murillo stated that the accusations were “a total falsehood.” The case was thrown out by the Supreme Court in 2001 because the statute of limitations had expired.
During her term, a series of protest broke out, resulting in 309 deaths by July 2018, some 25 of casualties being under the age of 17. Murillo and aide Néstor Moncada Lau were particularly targeted in an executive order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump on November 27, 2018. This executive order is one of several sanctions placed against her and her husband’s government by the United States since the unrest began.
Murillo was a secretary for Pablo Antonio Cuadra and Pedro Joaquin Chamorro, two of Nicaragua’s most prominent political and literary figures. Murillo was detained in Esteli for her political activities in 1976. She fled to Venezuela and Panama shortly thereafter. Later, she moved to Costa Rica, where she devoted herself entirely to her political work with Radio Sandino. She also helped to found the FSLN. She returned to Nicaragua in 1979 after Somoza was overthrown by the Sandinistas. Murillo and Ortega got married in 2005.
