Rosario Crocetta is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 8, 1951 in Gela, Sicily, Italy. Crocetta was born in Gela (Sicily) in 1951. He is the son a water-worker, and a seamstress. Salvatore Crocetta, a former senator of the PCI, is Crocetta’s older brother. He worked in Gela for ENI after he received his diploma.

Crocetta is gay. Crocetta was the first openly homosexual mayor of Italy, when he was elected Mayor of Gela from 2003 to 2009. He is also the second openly homosexual head of a regional government after Nichi Vendola, when he was President of Sicily from 2012 to 2017.

In 2008, a failed plan to kill Crocetta was made public by the district attorney of Caltanissetta; as a result, Crocetta was immediately placed under tighter security.

In 2008, he joined the Democratic Party. In the 2009 European elections he was elected as a member of the European Parliament for the Italian Islands constituency with 150,091 votes. In 2012, Crocetta ran as gubernatorial candidate against Sebastiano “Nello” Musumeci of Berlusconi’s PDL party and eight other minor party candidates. Crocetta ran in Sicily on the ticket of La Rivoluzione è Già Iniziata (The Revolution Has Already Started) and obtained 30.5 percent of the votes, becoming the first left-wing governor of Sicily since 1947.

He ran for the Gela mayoral election in May 2002 as a centre-left coalition candidate. Giovanni Scaglione, a right-wing candidate, was elected in the first round with a narrow margin (197 votes). In 2003, however, the Administrative Court of Sicily found that electoral frauds had occurred in town elections. Crocetta was subsequently elected mayor. Telephone taps revealed that a Mafia boss had ordered a returning officer “move heaven to avoid the communist win.” He was the first openly homosexual mayor of Italy and a symbol for the fight against organized crime and obscurantism in Sicily. He was elected mayor of Gela again in 2007 with 64.4 percent.

He was later a member of the Communist Refoundation Party. He was elected as a Councillor for Culture at Gela City Council in 1998 with the Federation of the Greens. He was involved in cultural projects between Mediterranean countries. He joined the Party of Italian Communists in 2000. He was a councillor for public education in Gela between 2001 and 2002.

In 2003, a plot to kill Crocetta during the patronal feast of the Immaculate Conception involving a Lithuanian killer was thwarted by the local Carabinieri. After that episode, Crocetta was placed under security.
