Rosalynn Sumners is one of the most popular and richest Figure Skater who was born on April 20, 1964 in Palo Alto, United States. Rosalynn Diane Sumners, born April 20, 1964, is an American singles figure skating champion. She was the World Junior champion 1980, U.S. National champion 1982, 1983, 1984, World champion 1983, and World champion 1983. In 1983 she was also the World champion. In 1984, she won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics (second to Katarina Witt).
Sumners gave three of her world figure skate medals to an Edmonds bank in order to display them in 1984. The bank had transferred ownership and Sumners was unable to find where the medals were stored when she returned to retrieve them. They had been lost for over 20 years. However, they were found as unclaimed property in safe deposit boxes and returned to Sumners in 2004 with mock “awards” ceremonies by the state.
Though born in Palo Alto, California, Sumners was raised in Edmonds, Washington and learned to skate there, and considered it to be her hometown throughout her skating career. 5th Avenue in Edmonds was renamed “Rosalynn Sumners Boulevard” in 1984 after her Olympic performance. “Roz” as many would call her was a very hard working skater. Her coach, Lorraine Borman, was called the “Wizard of Roz” and established her student’s artistry as her strong point in her skating. Sumners balanced her athleticism and artistry which always gave her that competitive edge.
On April 24, 2004, she married IMG vice president Bob Kain. She opened several retail shops in Kirkland in 2011.
Sumners was expected to do great things in 1982-1983, and had made significant improvements in her compulsory figures. She defeated strong competitors like Kristina Wegelius and Claudia Leistner to win Skate America. She was expected to win again, but she ended up finishing a disappointing bronze at Skate America, where Vikki De Vries won. This was after several poor falls during the long program. After two disappointing performances, she settled for silver at NHK behind Katarina Witt. Rosalynn showed her best at U.S Nationals. She was more fit and powerful in her jumps and easily retained her title over Elaine Zayak (1981 U.S Champion). Her short program was particularly impressive. She did a flawless performance, including a triple jump combination. This was the first time she had ever competed in the short. She also earned a majority of 5.9s on technical and artistic marks. She was one of the favorites at the World Championships in that year and won her first and only World title. After winning the figures, she was forced to settle for 4th in shorts after a missed triple jump combination that she had used at Nationals. She then won the long program. Elaine Zayak, who suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw from the figures competition, and Katarina Witt, who placed 4th overall after finishing 8th in figures despite having finished 1st in the short and 2nd to Rosalynn (on 5-4 split) during the final long program.

Sumners was first recognized when she won the 1980 World Junior title. Sumners impressed everyone with her free skating style from 1980-1981. She placed 1st to 2nd in each round of competitions in free skating. However, she was very weak in compulsory figures at this stage in her career (at the tail of her career a tremendous strength). She did not make it to the U.S. World team or win many medals.
She made an even greater impact in the 1981-1982 season, despite still being a weak figure skater. She won a silver at Skate Canada, winning the free skate and combined-free skate but finishing 8th in figures. Later, she won an upset U.S. title over Elaine Zayak, rising star Vikki de Vries and veteran Priscilla Hills. After the figures, she rose from 5th to win the short and long programs. Rosalynn had to cut down on her technical content at the World Figure Skating Championships due to injury. She attempted only one triple in each of the two free skating phases. However, she still delivered strong short and long programs. She placed 4th (behind Witt and Leistner), Vodezorova in the short, and 5th in long (behind Zayak Witt, Leistner and Kristofics Binder), while 4th in combined free skate (behind Witt and Leistner), and Zayak).
She would opt out of trying for a 2nd World title at the upcoming Worlds in Ottawa, and instead turn professional immediately after the 1984 Winter Olympics. She toured first with Disney on Ice, and then was one of the original cast members of the Stars on Ice tour, with which she appeared until
- She became one of the most consistent and long standing competitors on the professional circuit, appearing at the World Professional Championships in Landover an astonishing 10 consecutive years (from 1984 to 1993) although never winning the event. Her biggest win was the Challenge of Champions victory in 1986, and she was also a winner at numerous other professional competitions. She would not do any triple jumps in professional competitions, but was known for beautiful and versatile skating.
