He has expressed his concern over the growing amount of information that companies and government agencies have on individuals throughout the years. Rop and Frank Rieger gave a controversial talk titled “We Lost the War” at the Chaos Communication Congress 2005, Berlin.

On 16 May 2008 the Dutch government decided that elections would be held using paper ballots and red pencil only. A proposal to develop a new generation of voting computers was rejected.

On 14 December 2010, in relation to ongoing investigations of WikiLeaks, the US Department of Justice issued a subpoena ordering Twitter to release information regarding Gonggrijp’s account as well as those of Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning, Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Jacob Appelbaum and all 637,000 users following @wikileaks. The reason is Gonggrijp’s collaboration in releasing the “Collateral Murder” video in April 2010, a WikiLeaks action.

XS4ALL was founded by Hack-Tic’s friends, including Gonggrijp, in 1993. It was the first ISP to offer access to the Internet to private citizens in the Netherlands. Gonggrijp sold his company to Dutch-Telecom KPN, his former enemy in 1997. Gonggrijp left XS4ALL in 1997 to start ITSX, a company that specializes in computer security evaluations. Madison Gurkha purchased it in 2006. Gonggrijp began work on the Cryptophone in 2001. This mobile phone can encrypt conversations.

Gonggrijp was a Dutch citizen. He grew up in Wormer, the Dutch Zaanstreek region. He became a hacker as a teenager and was featured in Jan Jacobs’s book Kraken en Computers, (Hacking and computers Veen uitgevers 1985 ISBN 90-204-2651-6), which discusses the Dutch hacker scene. In 1988, he moved to Amsterdam. In 1989, he founded Hack-Tic, a hacker magazine. Authorities in the United States and the Netherlands considered him a significant security threat. Hack-Tic’s masthead described Gonggrijp’s role as hoofdverdachte, or ‘prime suspect’. He believed that the Internet would revolutionize society.

Gonggrijp is the organizer of hacker events every four years since 1989. These events were originally organized by Hack-Tic and have survived to this day.

In 2006 he founded the organisation “Wij vertrouwen stemcomputers niet” (“We do not trust voting computers”) which campaigns against the use of electronic voting systems without a Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail and which showed in October 2006 on Dutch television how an electronic voting machine from manufacturer Nedap could easily be hacked. These findings were taken seriously both by the Dutch government and by international election observers.
