Ronald Howard Jirsa, an American college basketball coach, was born December 21, 1959. He is currently Radford’s assistant coach. He was previously the University of Georgia’s head coach and Marshall University’s assistant coach.

Jirsa was Division III Bethel University’s recruiting coordinator in the 2013-14 season. In the following season, Jirsa was an assistant to Steve Payne at Tennessee Tech. Jirsa was also an assistant at Radford, under Mike Jones, in 2015.

Jirsa, who was appointed head coach at Georgia after Smith left for the University of Kentucky in 1997. After leading Georgia to the 1998 National Invitation Tournament title, Jirsa was fired in 1999. He had been 35-30.

Ronald Howard Jirsa was a Connecticut native who was raised in Ledyard. Jirsa graduated from Ledyard High School in 1978. She then attended Gettysburg College. Jirsa was a member of the basketball team and graduated from Gettysburg College in 1981 with a Bachelor’s degree in biology.

While he was an assistant coach, he had two notable stints at Tulsa University, the first under J. D. Barnett (1985-1988) and the second under Tubby Smith (1991-1993). Jirsa, while working as an assistant coach, completed his Master of Arts in Athletic Administration at Tulsa. Smith promoted Jirsa as associate head coach in 1994. Jirsa then followed Smith to the University of Georgia.

Jirsa moved to Dayton and was an assistant for four seasons there before getting another head coaching job at Marshall. Jirsa was fired after four seasons at Marshall, going 43-74. Most recently, he served under Tubby Smith as an assistant at the University of Minnesota. On March 25, 2013, it was announced that Smith, along with his entire staff had been relieved as coaches at Minnesota.
