Ronald William Hillyard, born 31 March 1952, is an English former goalkeeper. He played seventeen years for Gillingham, where he holds the record of playing in the most matches in all competitions.
Hillyard was named Ebbsfleet U’s goalkeeping coach in 2002. He remained with the club through 2016. Hillyard also served as a goalkeeping coach for Gillingham in the 2011-12 season.
Hillyard was Kent’s first choice goalkeeper for almost seventeen years. He retired in 1991 after sustaining a back injury. He had been appointed assistant manager two years before by Damien Richardson. This position he held until 1992, when both Richardson and Hillyard were fired. Hillyard was a witness to the Gillingham victory over West Ham United, 3-2, at Priestfield Stadium on 15 May 1983. Hillyard was expected break John Simpson’s record of Gillingham’s most league appearances, but he ended up losing 8 matches to Simpson’s 571. Hillyard, however, set a new club record with 657 appearances in all competitions. He also kept 202 clean sheets.

Hillyard was born in Brinsworth and played inside forward as a schoolboy before being sent in goal as a punishment. Hillyard joined Rotherham United in the amateur category until the training nights were stopped. After playing for Brinsworth Athletic, he was recommended to Leeds United. He spent a season there as fourth-choice goalkeeper. Bobby Sibbald recommended him to York City. Hillyard joined the club as a junior and was promoted to the first-team when the club was in crisis.
After his first meeting with Brian Clough, he was asked to cut his hair. He made only 61 Football League appearances in York City over the next five year, but he never became a regular first-team player. In 1974, Gillingham manager Len Ashurst was finally able to sign the Yorkshireman from Hartlepool United.
