Ronald William Hassey, born February 27, 1953, is an American former professional baseball player. He was a Major League Baseball (MLB), catcher for the Cleveland Indians (1978-1984), Chicago Cubs (1884), New York Yankees (1985-1986), Chicago White Sox (1986-1987), Chicago White Sox (1986-1987), Oakland Athletics (1988-1990), Montreal Expos (1991). Hassey is a notable MLB catcher for having caught more than one perfect ball (his first game with Len Barker in 1981, and his second with Dennis Martinez 1991). Hassey is the only catcher in MLB history who has caught a no-hitter both in one league.
Hassey served as a coach for both the expansion Colorado Rockies (1993-1995) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1996). From 1997 to 2003, he was a scout with the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2004, he managed the Carolina Mudcats. He also served as a bench coach under Mike Hargrove for the Seattle Mariners in 2005-06. Hargrove and Hassey were teammates in the Cleveland Indians’ Class A Affiliate from 1979 to 1984. He managed the Miami Marlins’ Class-A Affiliate, the Jupiter Hammerheads, for the 2011 season. He managed the Miami Marlins Triple-A Affiliate, The New Orleans Zephyrs, for the 2012-2013 season. Hassey announced his retirement from baseball after the New Orleans Zephyrs’ last game.
Hassey was a member of the Athletics’ World Series team in three years. He was part of the 1988 World Series losing team to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1988, he caught Dennis Eckersley while catching him during the famous Kirk Gibson’s 1988 World Series homer. He was also part of the A’s team which defeated the San Francisco Giants (though he didn’t play in the series) and lost to Cincinnati Reds in 1990 World Series. Hassey’s career postseason average of.323 was impressive.

The Cleveland Indians drafted Hassey in the 18th round 1976 amateur draft. He was a player for the San Jose Bees and Williamsport Tomahawks as well as the Toledo Mud Hens and the Portland Beavers.
His MLB debut was made on April 23, 1978. He played his last game on September 3, 1991. He was a regular season player in 1,192 games. He was most well-known for his catching every game of Bob Welch, the Oakland Athletics’ starting pitcher. This included the 1990 season when Welch won 27 games and received the Cy Young Award trophy. He caught Dennis Martinez’s perfect match against the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 28, 1991. Martinez was his only catch that season, and he had been exclusively catching him with the Expos.
Hassey is the son of Joseph Bill Hassey, a former baseball player in the New York Yankees’ minor-league system. He was born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, and attended Tucson High Magnet School where, in 1972, his team went undefeated and won the state championship. He then went to the University of Arizona coached by Jerry Kindall. In Hassey’s senior year (1976) the Wildcats won their first of three NCAA Championship’s under Kindall. Hassey’s father also played for Tucson High Magnet School and the University of Arizona.
